Norway Considers Possible Ban on Camera-Equipped ‘Spy Glasses’

Norway is considering a ban on smart glasses and various wearable headsets with cameras, driven by pressing privacy concerns regarding this controversial technology.

Karianne Tung, Norway’s digital minister, stated that the government is reviewing regulations for wearable devices equipped with cameras, including those made by Meta and Snap. The possible inclusion of facial recognition technology in these devices has alarmed civil liberties groups, who argue it could infringe upon personal privacy. Critics have labeled these gadgets as “pervert glasses,” leading to significant public outcry.

Tung noted a “clear trend towards merging artificial intelligence with cameras and microphones in everyday items like glasses, headphones, and hats.”

“It is essential to introduce measures that prevent this technology from being utilized for surveillance in public spaces,” Tung stressed, suggesting that this may include banning facial recognition of individuals in such areas.

Tung plans to establish a committee of experts to help the government enhance the protection of citizens’ privacy rights.
