MTN and Springboks to Conclude Sponsorship Collaboration

After an impressive series of victories at the Rugby World Cup, showcasing remarkable teamwork, exceptional skills, thrilling tries, and bringing immense joy to fans from various backgrounds, the sponsorship collaboration between MTN and the Springboks is set to conclude following an impactful eight-year duration.

The Springboks, having earned the title of world champions, have claimed Rugby World Cup victory four times in total, with two of these titles—2019 and 2023—accomplished during MTN’s sponsorship tenure.

Recently, Sportswire reported that MTN will not be extending its sponsorship agreement upon its expiration in June.

“This partnership has been a tremendous source of inspiration and reward for MTN, particularly when we stepped in as the principal sponsors during a challenging phase for rugby in 2017, after the Boks struggled since their last World Cup triumph in 2007,” remarked MTN SA CEO, Charles Molapisi.

“For us, it transcended mere branding; it was about fostering transformation by reconnecting rugby with the community and promoting the spirit of Ubuntu. We demonstrated our leadership and commitment to South African sport, and we couldn’t be more proud of the results.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to SA Rugby for trusting us as their principal sponsor for such a lengthy period. We take great pride in our partnership, which has fostered the growth of the game and marked a glorious era of success for both current and future generations.

“As we conclude this successful journey, both on and off the field—where the game expanded beyond legendary venues like Emirates Airline Park, Stade de France, and Twickenham to urban areas, small towns, and rural regions needing growth—both MTN and the Boks will embark on new chapters in their sponsorship stories.”

Mr. Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, expressed: “I want to sincerely thank MTN for their unwavering support over the past eight years.

“We reached out to corporate South Africa for partnerships during a difficult period for rugby in our nation, and MTN decisively responded. Together, we have witnessed what will surely be remembered as a golden age for the sport.”

“The Springboks have visited MTN’s offices twice as newly crowned world champions, marking the pinnacle of our collaboration. MTN has backed us unconditionally—not just in pursuit of rugby victories but in demonstrating the strength of South Africa’s diversity when we come together.

“MTN’s belief in us during those tough times was incredibly uplifting. Indeed, rugby would have faced challenges without the unwavering support of our partners. MTN has been at the forefront of this initiative, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”

Alongside SA Rugby, MTN has played a pivotal role in enhancing the global profile of SA Rugby and ensuring its long-term sustainability.

“Beyond the professional arena, MTN has invested R30 million in grassroots rugby development throughout South Africa, and we will continue our crucial role in nurturing the growth of rugby nationwide,” Molapisi added.

During its time as principal sponsor, MTN focused on expanding and energizing the fanbase to rally behind their team. MTN invested in fan engagement initiatives such as BokSquad, the official Springbok supporters club, and the Bozza platform, bringing fans closer to their passion—and their team.

Molapisi emphasized: “Our achievements would not have been possible without the fans, and I want to extend my gratitude to every Bok supporter across the nation—from young children in Dutywa celebrating in the streets to families in vibrant cities and peaceful villages—for their incredible passion and loyalty. The Boks’ global successes are a reflection of their unwavering support.

“I firmly believe that rugby and its development are poised for even greater advancements, grounded in the strong foundation of transformative achievements, loyalty, support, and excellence demonstrated over the past eight years.”

As part of its renewed branding strategy, MTN is reassessing its sponsorship approach to identify fresh opportunities that will promote advancement for a broader range of athletes across the nation.

MTN remains committed to sport and development in South Africa, continuing to invest in football through its MTN8 sponsorship.

“We wear the Bok jersey with pride. The success of rugby showcases the unifying power of sport in our nation, inspiring its people and offering hope to millions. With continued support from MTN and other corporations, along with backing from organizations like SA Rugby, South Africa will continue to nurture tomorrow’s champions,” Molapisi concluded.
