Threads Unveils Innovative Approach for Sharing Long-Form Text

Meta has announced to TechCrunch that Threads is introducing a new feature designed to simplify the sharing of extensive text on the platform. This update enables users to attach a block of text to their posts, eliminating the need for multiple posts to express detailed thoughts and ideas.

App researcher Radu Oncescu was the first to spot the new “text attachment” feature on iOS and provided a screenshot. The app describes this feature as a method for users to “attach longer texts and utilize styling tools to share deeper insights, news snippets, book excerpts, and more.”

By allowing the sharing of long-form content, Threads may retain creators and writers looking for increased visibility for articles they typically post on their blogs or platforms like Substack. It also removes the inconvenience of workarounds, like sharing screenshots of longer texts from a Notes app when posts exceed the standard word limit.

Threads user Robert P. Nickson showcased the new feature by sharing a post, illustrating how it appears to viewers. A snippet of the extended text is presented in a gray box within the post, which users can click to read and scroll through the full content.

In contrast, Threads’ competitor, X, allows users to share long-form content through “Articles.” However, this feature is limited to Premium subscribers, while Threads offers it to all users, although this may change in the future.

Moreover, while Threads supports only text sharing, X permits the inclusion of images and videos. Since this feature is still undergoing testing, it’s likely that Threads might add multimedia support in the future.

Meta has expressed plans to expand this feature to a larger user base soon.

This support for long-form posts is the latest enhancement among various new features Threads has implemented over the past year, which include direct messaging, fediverse integrations, customized feeds, AI enhancements, and more.

In just two years since its launch, Threads has achieved over 400 million monthly active users. In comparison, X reports more than 600 million monthly active users, according to former CEO Linda Yaccarino.
