Why Runway is Focusing on the Robotics Sector for Future Revenue Growth
For the past seven years, Runway has been at the forefront of visual generation technology in the creative industry. The company is now venturing into robotics as a thrilling path for innovation.
Located in New York, Runway has gained fame for its AI-powered video and photo generation models, which utilize large language models to replicate reality with impressive accuracy. Significant milestones include the launch of Gen-4 for video creation in March and the debut of Runway Aleph, a video editing model, in July.
As Runway’s models evolve towards greater authenticity, interest from robotics and autonomous vehicle manufacturers has notably surged. Anastasis Germanidis, co-founder and CTO of Runway, shared his perspectives on this transition with TechCrunch.
“We recognize that our capability to simulate the world opens up significant opportunities beyond entertainment, although entertainment remains a vital and expanding focus for us,” Germanidis noted. “This ability enhances the scalability and cost-effectiveness of training [robotic] algorithms that interact with real-world environments, whether in robotics or autonomous driving.”
Germanidis highlighted that exploring robotics and autonomous vehicles was not part of Runway’s original vision established in 2018. However, through engagement with these fields, the company found that its models possess a broader range of applications than previously thought.
Robotics companies are incorporating Runway’s technology into various training scenarios. Germanidis pointed out the difficulties of training robots and autonomous vehicles in real-world environments, noting the high costs, labor intensity, and challenges of scalability.
While Runway acknowledges the limitations of traditional field training, Germanidis stated that organizations could gain considerable advantages from simulations generated by Runway’s models due to their accuracy.

Compared to conventional training methods, utilizing these models allows for precise evaluation of specific variables and scenarios while controlling other factors, he remarked.
“You can step back and simulate the outcomes of different actions,” he elaborated. “For example, if a car takes one turn instead of another or performs a specific maneuver, what would the results be? Consistently replicating such scenarios in real life is challenging, as controlling all environmental variables while assessing a particular action’s effects is difficult.”
Runway isn’t the sole entity in this arena; Nvidia recently unveiled the latest version of its Cosmos world models along with new robotic training frameworks this month.
According to Germanidis, the company does not plan to create a separate line of models specifically for robotics and autonomous driving clients. Instead, Runway aims to enhance its current models for these fields and focus on building a dedicated robotics team.
Germanidis observed that while these domains were not part of the initial pitch to investors, they have proven open to this new direction. Runway has secured over $500 million from investors such as Nvidia, Google, and General Atlantic, achieving a valuation of $3 billion.
“We see our company as guided by a core principle rather than simply reacting to market demands,” Germanidis explained. “This principle centers around simulation—enhancing how the world is represented. Once we develop robust models, we can apply them across multiple markets and industries. We believe the sectors we’ve identified are already well-positioned and will continue to advance, driven by the potential of generative models.”
